Carry on Camping
Having listened carefully to everyone's advice about beach shelters I then wandered into Gerry's and saw an Ian Golds' Igloo standing proud + erect at the top of the stairs. After a quick look over I decided to go for one, wide front opening or not,it just looked so dead simple and easy to put up and more than big enough for my needs.
£100 lighter I whipped down to the beach to pump a few fat Skellies,no chance of blacks round the locality today with a 2.6m low. Lots of others out pumping/push netting,it wasn't the easiest task as there were precious few casts showing of any kind at all but I managed to procure a couple of dozen nice big fat Whiting magnets. Being much bigger than 'normal' lug you only need 1 per hook, none of this 2" blow lug shenanigans
I made an early start to get to Rossall for the 8.04 evening high, just as well really too as Lancaster was blocked as normal and we ended up arriving at the usual time. We got unloaded in a hurry, everyone fully dressed for sub arctic weather as it'd absolutely hammered it down on us all the way there and the foreboding black cloud filling the sky promised more of the same if not worse.
Up an over the wall and there were already lights as far as we could see in both directions, must've been quite a few came back from fishing low water as it was still 3 and a quarter hours off high but the beach was chock a block. We traipsed what felt like a few hundred bays down until we found an unoccupied one and set up the shelter right back against the wall as the 8.6 tide seemed to be making a bit more than expected.A doddle to put up even with no practice whatsoever but Ill put a review on in more detail about that soon.
New lantern fired up,again review to come, family installed under cover and food organised,I set up 2 rods with clipped 2 hook rigs and pulley pennel rigs, all carrying 3/0-4/0 hooks.I had some frozen Black, frozen Peelers and sprats to compliment the Skellies and finally got chucked in at 5.20
The Whitin' were a bitin' and a steady stream of small to small/medium fish kept the tip nodding for the first hour and a half
It started to look all too familiar though, nothing better seemed to be coming out anywhere and this was partially confirmed by the appearance of a fisheries officer who landed up going about his checks. But then he announced 'I've seen 5 Cod on here tonight-on 1 person's box!' So they WERE there but apparently they'd been mostly caught at low water, might be worthy of note. After a lengthy yarn including discussion of the apparently IMMINENT closure of the Heysham Outflows (apparently all crossed + dotted and just awaiting final gov't stamp) he left with fresh steak + onion pie,Cherry Bakewells and apple pies (all homemade)
Having lost some fishing time chewing the fat with the fisheries man I went to move the tripod which was in danger of getting washed away at any moment as the waves were getting pretty big despite the lack of wind. I dragged it back up and gave Jess a rod to lift up the ramp than walked round with the other. As I walked up the ramp with the rod pointed to sea in one hand it suddenly thumped down 3 times, great to feel so hands on! This was something better at last and after the usual nervous few seconds when the crashing surf and powerful undertow can relieve you of your catch were negotiated I beached a 2lb 5oz Codling-along of course with the obligatory Whiting.
Buoyed by this development I bent the old back a bit more to reach the area I'd popped the last cast out to and within 2 minutes was in again.A second Codling a shade bigger than the first at about 2lb 8oz,once again on frozen Blacks
That was it for the Codling, not a sniff after that though on the ebb I did manage to ad a couple of Whiting of similar stamp to the earlier ones.No takers on the Whiting but at least there were no real mini pins but it'd have been frustrating to have another Whiting only session so the Codling really put a smile on for us.
I probably didn't fish it as hard as usual so it was a pleasing result,I was playing about with the shelter and lamp and getting pics, then spent about half an hour with the fisheries guy, then gorged myself on the pies. The Bakewells were breathaking and none of this 20mm thick supermarket fare, these were 2" deep and 4" across The steak + onions were pretty damn good too, A pie, yesterday
Shame nobody turned up for a picnic
So it was a good day,the weather didn't really turn nasty and when it did rain there was room or 3 people to get under the shelter and stay warm & dry.Great food + drink, family all enjoying themselves,Cod for tea today, couldn't ask for more
I'd be out today but work gets hectic this time of year, god knows how some lads manage it,I'm insanely jealous but Ill take this session to put me on til next week. Good luck if you're out and WELL DONE to the AA member (sorry not got the name to hand) who got the SIX Codling further down.Top fishing

thats what i call a report well done on your session. we fished to the left of the hospital think it was me and my mate who you mentioned with the codling and yes majority caught at low with 2 2hrs before high.
looks a nice comfy set up you had there and i would of gladly swapped a codling for that pie last night it looked beltin.
