Heysham Fishing Ban – IFCA to Ban Fishing at Heysham Power Station
IFCA (Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority) are to impose the new bylaw to ban ALL types of fishing within the Heysham Bass nursery area.
A full copy of the byelaw is available free from the NWIFCA office or website www.nw-ifca.gov.uk, or by clicking here.
Objections to confirmation of this byelaw should be sent in writing within 28 days of publication of this notice to:
NWIFCA, 1 Preston Street, Carnforth LA5 9BY or office@nw-ifca.gov.uk AND Marine Conservation and Enforcement Team, MMO, PO Box1275, Newcastle NE99 5BN or IFCAbyelaws@marinemanagement.org.uk
The final deadline for objections is March 15th 2013
The byelaw hasn’t been imposed as such yet. It’s been made and agreed by the NWIFCA committee, but wont be fully implemented until the consultation period is over and it has been signed off by the fisheries minister, Richard Benyon.
You may remember we posted information regarding the proposed bylaw back in April 2012 – Heres the post if you missed it: –
You may have seen some of the discussion last week when Phill Williams dropped a bombshell on the local angling community via his blog. The original blog post said with reference to the Current Bass nursery area at Heysham :
There is already an exclusion zone around the nursery area for boats fishing for Bass, in addition to which we are now working on a new bye-law, though as yet not implemented, excluding ALL fishing including that done from the shore too.
Thankfully an odd person saw fit to pass the word around and his post soon made it onto a couple of forums. Panic was not the word, thinking that the current area included the Northwall at Heysham Harbour – thankfully this has turned out not to be the case.
However the area will include some of the south harbour wall, the south roundhead, the Wooden extension and of course the area actually around the power station outflows.
We have been in contact with the Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCAs) and have received further information on the matter along with an accurate map of the area.
The wording of the new by-law is as follows.
No person shall fish for or remove any sea fish by any means from that part of the District surrounding Heysham Power Station, which is covered by the Bass (Specified Areas) (Prohibition of Fishing) Order 1990, SI 1990 No. 1156 during any part of the year, unless for scientific purposes with the written permission of the Authority.

setting aside any debate on the merits, exact boundary etc. I hope that, if this is confirmed, this area will be properly and vigorously enforced, otherwise what is the point. Too many of us have seen bags of undersized fish being taken away in the past and if this is stopped then that has to be a good thing and will hopefully help bass fishing elsewhere in Morecambe Bay
