After looking at the forecast and tide table for the coming week I decided to fish Rossall on Wednesday night, only problem I didn’t want to go alone.

I know Rossall beach can be ok as long as you have your wits about you. Luckily for me Terry, (four bouys) said he would be heading that way and I could meet up with him.


Plan was to fish 7pm and see how we got on. I arrived early and went for a look over the wall before Terry arrived. Thinking to myself ‘we must be mad’ I headed back to the car and got ready.

Soon after Terry arrived and after the introductions we headed for the beach. Along the way we talked about if it was fishable and came to the decision that yes it was!

Terry picked our spot after explaining why and first casts were in the water around 7pm.
It didn’t take long for things to kick off. I was stood talking to Terry my rod tip pinged back and I ran over to see a slack line. Reeling in I could feel something but when I got it in, nothing. Oh well still plenty of time.

About 30-45 minutes later Terry was knee deep in water after one of the gulleys started to empty. Soon after, and most of the gulley gone, the codling started to feed (for Terry anyway!). Stood holding my tripod so it didn’t end up flying down the beach, I got a shout over that he was in, sure enough a nice codling. Then 5 minutes later another shout and another codling. Then again with another. Terry was spot on with his thinking where the fish might be I couldn’t believe it, things looked good for me catching a couple before the end of the night (I wish!).

Terry had 3 before 8.30pm and low water wasn’t until 9.00pm.

In between me picking my tripod up numerous times, I managed a few whiting and dogs, each time hoping it was a codling and each time getting p***ed off with another dog.

With low water and the flood came more from Terry. Dabs, dogs and 4 more codling (2 that were put back being undersize).

Terry ended with 7 codling, 2 dabs and however many dogs. I finished with 0 codling, however many dogs and a couple of whiting.



Conditions were tough at times with westerlys and driving rain at one point….(he who dares)….. but a new mark explored properly thanks to Terry and plenty of fish to keep us both busy. Cheers Terry

cheers mark it was really nice to meet you and a pleasure fishing with you I just got lucky last night I'm sure you will catch plenty of codling over the next couple of months and the more you fish the low water marks the more confident you will become but you did the right thing fishing with an experienced low water fisherman especially at night as gulleys can quickly fill behind you if youre not familiar with the beach anyway hope to fish with you again soon pal I'm going to give it a last bash tonight hopefully the same result again

Well done both on a good catching session and a good learning exercise too..?? Some nice codlets there, and those dogs kept your rod tip banging..!!( don't knock it..!!!)

Busy night for you both and just strange how you can be 20yard for someone into the Cod and your not but that's fishing .......

Good work gents . It never ceases to amaze me how 'peggy' the beach can be. A bucket/bag of stones/sand hung on your tripod helps to stabilise it Marc
