Barnsfold disaster
I ended up going to Barnsfold yesterday, I went on my own in the end because Jamie was having a bad hair day, As soon as I got there big black clouds moved overhead so discretion being the better part of valour I sat in my car till they passed, I didn't want to be casting a carbon rod in the middle of a lake in a thunderstorm.as it was it never rained at all.
Set up at the far side of the left hand lake as the wind was blowing from left to right, not a touch.
Unusually for me I then proceeded moving from spot to spot and giving it half an hour or so before moving on, and I must have tried about 6-7 parts of the lake, I tried every fly in my armoury from lures every of colour and type, buzzers, Diawl bach's ,Dries but all to no avail the trout were having none of it.
At one point I found a corner that had a shoal swimming around in it so spent half an hour or so pulling flies through the middle of them to see their reaction, apart from following it they showed absolutely no interest in eating anything.
At 20.30 I waved the white flag and went home. the only fish I saw anyone else catch was a Rudd and a Bream, Both on dry flies.
Not sure what the problem is at the moment as I was fishing the lake without the algae in it, so I can only put it down to atmospherics or water temp. will see what happens next week.

Re: Barnsfold disaster
Hard going mate, we had a newsletter from WADAA the other day saying that water temperatures etc were making the fishing almost impossible on our waters too. Fly rods now away till Sept/Oct Baz says ( and he'll know...) and floats and poles and feeders and stuff... Forecast is for cooler and a bit of rain from today? Should make things a little better..?? Cheers for an interesting report though...
There's more to fishing than catching fish...

Yes, trout being principally cold water fish really don't like this warm weather, as I'd said to Sharpey yesterday, we'll leave the fluff chucking until back end now
Water temperatures up here on stillwaters have gone to over 20 deg, nice for holidays but no good for fly fishing, our club waters have come to a standstill at the moment, stocking, as always never takes place after the end of May
However, it will give the fish a chance to 'wild up' a bit and feed up on bugs and grubs, ready for sport to start in September again
Back to 'maggot drowning' for now

Re: Barnsfold disaster
Its even quiet at Stocks at the moment, I would have thought that the debth of water would have made a difference to the temp. rise, and with its elevation above sea level its always a degree or two below what it is on the coast, they are still catching but only in small numbers.
Hopefully a bit of a cool spell might bring the fishing back on again for a while at least, like Russ says I will still stick at it because I enjoy getting out and trying and I would rather be fishing and blanking than not fishing, I will dig out the boat and get up to Walney or down to Wales and have a go at the Bass, so all is not lost.
The quiet spell will also give me a chance to try other fisheries and see what they are like.

It does look worth a trip Russ but during this fish drought I need to be careful not to write a fishery off because the lack of fish caught, if my last few trips to Barnsfold were my first I would be crying the place is rubbish and has no fish in it, and probably never return there again, as I actually know its full of fish I would be doing it a great mis-service. I will wait until this blows over and then try other fisheries. But as I am sitting around twiddling my thumbs after retiring I will drive around a few for a look-see.
You can usually tell how good a fishery is by looking at its popularity, if a place is rubbish, nobody goes twice, if its ok then it gets chocka at the weekend.

Well worth a look Billy, the guy that owns it now is called Mike Roden.
He's on you tube with casting tips.
Spent some money on it with a cafe, shop etc so would presume it's doing okay.
I'm going to give it a go soon but I won't be able to tell how good it fishes with my limited knowledge.
Look forward to your assessment of it mate

Let me know when you are going Russ and if I can I will meet you there, Just give me a day or two to shuffle things about a bit, I am actually working at the mo, but the upside is my wife's my boss lol and she is a push over for getting time off, just can't up and go though, I work from home as a recruitment consultant for the motor industry , so it takes a bit of shuffling sometimes.
