brilliant day, s/w scotland
4 of us from the northeast coast [hartlepool] traveled up early sunday morning arriving at our mark around 9.30am.
the forecast was for cloud cover all day with light winds. it turned out to be a lovely sunny day with a siff, warm breeze on our faces.
after our visit a month ago and loosing a few hooklengths to tope [catching one], we were all using a wire trace on some of our rigs
. i opted for a 2 hook flapper with a size 2/0 to 50lb hooklength on the top and a 5/0 with wire trace on the bottom. this meant i'd be fishing a crab bait on the top hook for hounds and a large fish bait on the bottom hook for tope or huss, every cast.
once on the mark we were all quickle into fish on our first casts
. the other 3 all had dogs on while i had something better. this one pulled harder and was a 7lb smoothound. not bad for our first 5 minutes on the mark.
fishing was hectic with bites as soon as you hit the water and before you could even start to bait up your next trace. on most of my casts i had 2 fish on, either 2 large dogs, dog and cod, dog and huss or dog and whiting. i totally lost track of what the other lads were bringing in as i was constantly baiting up or pumping fish up from the deep water in front of us.
this carried on for the full 7 -8hrs we fished. in all this time i only reeled in empty hooks 3 times.
at the end of the day i'd caught ...
11 huss, most 4 - 5lb, a couple at 7lb and one at 8lb and the best at 9lb. with another just as big that dropped on the lift as it held on to a whiting i'd already hooked.
1 smoothound at 7lb with a bigger one lost as it dived at the rock face cutting my 50lb hooklength off on an undercut.
4 size codling, the best 2.1/2lb and loads just undrsize.
whiting, poor cod and hundreds of dogs.
after bringing in a small whiting i knew the huss would be feeding on them [from my many trips to north wales] so imediately whipped on a whole side fillet much to the disbeliefe of jonny next top me
. this was litterally in the water 2 mins before my rod tip was pulled over. it worked and i landed a huss of 9lb
[this spat out a codling of about 8oz]
. later on i dropped a large huss that had grabbed a whiting i had hooked. i then took a filet off this whiting and cast it out. again within minutes an 8lb huss had taken it and was landed.
when we first started i had said to the lads to keep a count of the dogs we would catch. this was abandoned after half an hour as it became apparent we were going to get loads. they were even coming up 2 at a time one one hook for some of the lads.
the other 3 lads did very well aswell all getting among the huss with a number around 5lb and another couple arounf 7lb.
we had a brilliant session, my first cast was a 7lb hound and my last an 8lb huss with none stop fishing in between.
were hoping to travel accross for one last session in a couple of weeks before the seasons change.
back at work this morning and totally knackered but loved every minute of it.
