Chesil Beach (Masonic)
Stayed with me mate in the New Forest Saturday night and having parked on Minstead Village green outside his gaff I trod back to nature straight into a cow pat, correction frosty pat whilst getting into me car @ 2am sunday morning just before the off,sod it !!!!!!!!!!!!!okok...a bit of good luck,me thinks.
We were treading over the Masonic shingle around 4am and once set up me mates friend had a 3lb bass on party squid down the edge so a good start.
The tide ebbed and the anticipated fish hadnt shown for me but we were there all day to fish so wed see what would happen.
It was a cloudy breezy day as I looked along the beach to Chesil Cove and after 11am the flood brought a few tentative bites on rag on a scratching rig but the big coddy baits remained untouched in the deep water infront of us.
I had not fished this section before and was soon to learn it contains mixed ground as I lost a few sets of gear.
mid afternoon and I swiched to Rag tipped with crab legs and the
change brought me this little fella.
Never had a Corkwing Wrasse off Chesil before so it was a novelty,it seemed that around 70 yds was a patch of mixed ground and although it cost me snapped snoods I had 3 other mini corkwings all on size 2,s with Rag and crab.
The sea was like Gin so I decided on a pop up rig and small squid baits this gave me 3 Gars close in, this being the biggest.
With the cod baits still untouched I decided on a bigger crab bait over the ruff ground in front of me and after a proper bang I lifted into a fish but it went to ground and I though id lost it but after some 20 mins I picked the rod back up and it was free.
It fought well all the way in and although hoping for a coddy it turned out to be my best ever PB Ballan Wrasse from an open shore beach............3lb 4 oz.
It had blown its gut from the deep water retrievel so after popping it I hoped it would survive once returned..!!!!!!
My rods with Portland night lights behind.
After me mate and his friend left I fished on thru the HW but the rain and wind front had arrived and the rollers were making there mind up whether to wipe me off the beach.
This ball of snot on the ebb"and no I didn't undo the rig"..snip snip....he buggered off back in the surf with some mono scarring.
With the rain and waves building fishing was pants so even though I was still codless I decided to abandon the session and
drive the 2 1/2 hours home for a hot shower if just to warm up as the beach had been bloody freeezing all day.
Ok,no coddies again but stepping in the Cow Shiiiite had brought me a bit of good luck as it had got me a new PB Wrasse from open water ,and good company and banter made for an enjoyable trip, plus Phils mate is Mark Tunley the rod builder ............ http://www.marktunley.com/index.htm ....so it was interesting to nag about the merits of different kit and if I come into money he might just get me bizzness !!!!!!!!!!!!
