Couple of hours on No.1
A quick couple of hours on No.1 Barrier
Not being able to get out for a couple of days (wind & mooching around taking photos) I was itching just for a quick session, so decision was made. Seeing as it's been good so far barrier No.1 won my vote. I was only using up the last of the cut worms from my digging session and was only planning a couple of hours. I set up in 'My spot' as I've named it now lol, as I was setting the float up there looked to be the slightest of knocks on the bottom fishing rod. It not being a rod bender I left it while I set the float rod up. Now here's where things went ever so slightly pear shaped. Float was in and drifting along the barrier about 3 yards out. I started to reel in the other rod as it kept rattling. I was rewarded with another species (not new as no white barbels) but new from the barrier a little Short spined scorpion fish
However as I was unhooking and taking a photo I heard my tripod move I turned to see the float gone, my tripod sliding seawards with my trusty spinning rod heading all the same way. I immediately grabbed the lot and managed to get everything under control however it had been raining and the blocks are fun in the rain if you're an ice skater so now I started heading seawards. Luckily my boots eventually gripped. Once I'd got a bit of control back I concentrated getting the fish up. I could see it was another lovely red cod. Not quite as big as the one I had earlier in the week but still nice @ 2lb 9oz.
For the next hour or so the bottom rod remained motionless, however the cod, coalies & pollack kept me busy on the float.
My 2hrs were up so I called it a night. As I popped my head back up I could see why the blocks were wet now, it was blowing an absolute gale from the East side with that horizontal rain thrown in that we all like so much lol. Undeterred I traipsed back to the car and headed home for me tea of home made lamb curry, just what the Dr ordered especially as it was made with my own curry paste.
So No.1 continues to produce the fish. Hopefully if the weather is kind I'll hit Hoxa again Tuesday afternoon for my last session before we head back home.
Cheers
Col

Re: Couple of hours on No.1
I too have really enjoyed your posts from the isles Col . Brought back fond memories. I was there last August but concentrated on the game fishing as that's what I am most interested in. As a wild trout fishery many of the waters are considered to be world class and rated right up there with the likes of NZ, Tasmania and Patagonia. My mothers family were predominantly from St Margarets Hope (knockhall farm on the peninsular opposite the ferry terminal) and the islands of Rousay and Westray. On previous winter visits I've caught sea trout on the fly from the very spots you mention Great posts mate. Thanks again
