Downs and Ups of tiddler snatching

Decide on a quick look down Poole Quay just across from the car park

this small channel always looked inviting for a few fish so flicked out a 1up 1 down size 6,s fine wire with rag bits....

the rig had barely settled first cast and I had a rip roaring savage bite that pulled braid from the spool....I had to dip
the rod tip under the water as the fish headed under the wooden gangplanks....I applied as much pressure as possible
and next thing my 30 year old canal 2 piece scratching rod has exploded into 4 and the fish is tearing off ........end of.

bollox........the rod remains

Image

the fine wire hook didn't stand a chance as what I'm sure straightened it was a big bass.

Image

sat and had a coffee and decided id seen enough of here today so drove down to Ham Pier further round in Poole harbour
and used my spare light bass rod for some scrataching.......

had about a dozen tiddlers Corkwing Wrasse and a variety of Gobies ........

so tuff start breaking that rod but that's fishing sometimes .....and at least I had a few in the end.

I use my old course gear for small species but mine is in the form of a medium river feeder rod. That looked like a tight spot to try to control a big fish. Never mind that's as good an excuse as any to go and buy a brand new rod.

Still envious of your location...we did pass Pevensay Bay last week, but hadn't the chance to go in the pub...Well done mate, nice variety of fish for you, great sport...!!

Well Gazza, that about sums it up "sods law". Go for the tiddlers and hook a monster. Go for a monster and hook tiddlers  we've all been through it. I have family in hamworthy and never take my rods when visiting, maybe I should.
Anyway, Tip report as always and super pictures. Well done on the mini-list :thumb: :gp:

Nice one Gazza, I'm of the same opinion it was more than likely a mullet that smashed you up.

yer could be,you do get some shoals of thinlips running thru that channel,up to 5lb I'm gonna try all sorts of hook baits as its a popular spot for all the grockles to throw chips sausages and all manner of take aways ....crash dives under those boards can be so quick you can't react but I've sorted out my 2lb barbel rod and some 20lb mono on the reel so if it gets chaffed I might stand a chance of dragging it back....
lots of weed in there at the mo so I'm gonna groundbait under that floating weed spot and see whats lurking there over the coming weeks......sausage meat and sausage rusk paste works elsewhere for thins so ill try that as well as small shrimps ...all on size 12 barbel hooks ....won't straighten them muthers........hopefully I can report back without additional tackle breakages........ :banghead:
