Frustrating week in weymouth

Postby BigBadCol » 13 Sep 2017, 21:14

It seems like I’ve not been fishing for a while, technically it’s only been a month but compared to last year that’s a long time. This year I’ve done only a ¼ of the fishing I managed last year. I’ve also done more boat fishing than shore fishing which is totally not me, however when an opportunity arises you should take it.
Any way I digress on with the show so to speak.
Recently we have taken our(The LHG & me) annual holidays. It was supposed to be a 3 country extravaganza. In the end it was 2 and a rained off 3rd. So to set the scene, we had a week in Tuscany attending a very good friends wedding as well as taking in Lucca, Montefesagatsie, Bagni du Lucca, Pisa & Florence. All are amazing places to visit if you get a chance.
We arrived back from 40C Italy to a wet cold n windy Blighty. The 2nd part of our holiday was camping in Portesham near Abbotsbury in Dorset. The plan was to fish Chesil & Portland. However the weather gods took care of fishing Chesil and I ended up only fishing the stone pier & Portland Bill. I can honestly say it’s been the worst September I can remember in 15 years of going away in September. Sorry I wondered off again, back to the fishing. I did go and visit Chesil. I don’t know what it is about fishing and the weather. When I head out on my 2 day sessions I will, and have fished in all sorts of terrible conditions, however when I’m on holiday I just cannot be bothered if the weather is poor.
So with that in mind I headed to the stone pier with one species on my mind a garfish. Tactics were fish both light rods 1 on the bottom & 1 on the float for the Gars. As I arrived there were a few fishing and they were all catching Gars, so my hopes were high. I must have seen over 30 gars landed. All to other people, no matter what I tried I couldn’t buy a Gar. It’s a good job I was fishing the bottom, as I was kept very busy with the minis.

In the end I gave up bottom fishing and dedicated a whole 2 hours to watching my float drift across my vision from left to right. In the end it was the LHG that suggested we leave before I started crying. Seriously the Gars were everywhere but with me.

My next session was again going to be Chesil however I went down Portland end, walked up the shingle, put my head up over the top and decided Portland Bill would be today’s destination. Again I was kept really busy with all the wrasse. I did try bottom fishing at distance but kept losing hooks to snags so I just concentrated on the float.

Even the LHG had a go and caught

After a couple of hours I decided to try AGAIN to bag a Garfish from the stone pier.

Believe it or not this came on my 1st cast lol

In fact I caught 6 in 6 casts and was the only one catching anything so I had put my terrible Monday well and truly behind me.
Thursday I headed out on Al’s Spirit for the day with a friend I’ve met through fishing. We had an ok day I even bagged my 1st ever Brill off the Shambles.

It tasted lovely fried in butter and finished off on a bed of spicy lentils.
Thanks for sticking with me It was a very frustrating week of TRYing to fish.

Cheers

Blimey if only you had rung me.....I would have brought some kit and fished next to you by the crane....
jude and I walked straight past you and the mrs and pup.i even watched you from the cliff top 50 yds away catching a wrasse on your float gear.........I think seeing a bloke with his shirt off fishing I should have realised it was you flexing your larger than life torso col just didn't recognise you..........oh well never mind..............
we walked up to the 2nd crane then offski elsewhere...

pleased you caught a few here and there......nice flatty too.
