George Thornley Memorial

Postby Marc » 12 Dec 2014, 11:51

A few of the older AA members will remember this....I never got to fish one of these due to only being quite new at the time to fishing. Looking back through the forum reports (nothing new to read recently!) they seemed well attended and a good day out.

Does anybody know what happened to these....who arranged it all etc?

It was John Pie I think Marc, he and Phill85 seemed to be doing the running round at the last one though a lot chipped in. It was kinda across several forums, not sure how it came to be resurrected for that year but lads from Donkers,AA and even WSF came along.

It was Lancs vs Cumbria (Lancs vs Pugsie :lmao: ) and over 2 legs. I couldn't fish the Cumbrian leg but the Anchorsholme one was well attended, excellent raffle, food etc . Most kept it very informal and fun though I fished next to somebody who was timing his casts to 6 minutes and not speaking to anyone round him so my match was fun

Matches aren't my bag at all but that sort of format was OK, Sharpey and Baz came out to play too that day, think Sharpey caught a Porpoise .............could've been an oak tree though,I forget ???

Nice trophy, I can't help thinking it was for biggest fish over one/both legs,Pugs might even have won it if I recall correctly. Not a right lot of any stamp caught but it didn't matter much.

I think it was a fiver in for charity in memory of George Thornley , RNLI I think last time.

Thinking of running it again ?

Would be nice to see it back....I won't call it a match, more a gathering but it looked well run, well attended.

Not seen John post for a while ???

Some of the Fylde lads will tell you best Marc, I'm not sure of his exact angling connections but I understand he was murdered by a kid - a neighbour -breaking into his house, nasty job , very brutal .I think George was in his mid-late 60's. He was apparently missed and it came to light- when he was late for a fishing comp-or so it was written at the time if I remember. Very sad business, worthy of remembrance.
