Hurst bank

Postby Benny » 23 Jun 2014, 20:19

went for my first ever outing on the south coast.
my chosen venue was Hurst spit. got some good bait and advice from Lonis tackle in Milford??
surprised at the cost of lug down here compared to north Wales!
any how, 2 rods out from -2 HW to +3 HW.
2 hook flapper size 1/0 and a run of size 2 feathers. mix of baits, lug, rag and squid.
all that came out for me was a school bream?, foul hooked through its cheek.[img]
not too sure how to get pics up so bear with me.

was a lovely venue, and very busy with plenty of rods out.

At least you caught Benny,Hurst is about 20 mins from where I live in Dorset its a Top venue for lots of different species but to get the best from it a neap tide ebb is about the best time to fish it.

It has a fierce tide run along it and the weed can be horrendous...summer Bream and bass are targets with peeler baits but winter codding can be on its day brilliant but again due to its position
the bank does get smashed up by winter gales.

If you ever get to fish the hurst castle end it again has some awesome Bass fishing amoungst the groyns
mostly on freelined joeys.

The eastern side of the castle end has what they call the "Hole"...its around 50 foot deep and is full of decaying army equipment that was dumped by the yanks at wars end.....hense its known for some zoo creatures but the snags win most of the battles.....a neap flood is the ONLY way youll fish it as 10oz
leads on the ebb are just washed away..... :o

You can get out there on the ferry from Keyhaven...fish the night then get the first ferry back.....
its while your waiting for that first ferry as the tide floods in that those last few sandwiches
squashed in your bag are worth deplying for some mullet as there are some monster fish to be had.

again in the winter the wooden foot bridge you use to get onto the shingle bank has under it a relief channel that gets filled up and when the sea is running too much its good fun to break out the flatty gear
and fish for some Flounders In the channel.

Thanks for the advice Skatenchips!
I've recently moved down here from the north west. fishing previously around Merseyside, wirral and north wales.
its about 1.5 hours for me to Millford, so I'll be planning my next trips with your tide advice in mind.
as much as it pains me to admit it, as I'm relatively land locked here in Wiltshire, I've started doing more coarse fishing on ponds and these chalk streams.
but fishing is fishing I suppose and its better than nothing.
:fishing: :fishing:
thanks again.

If your now a Wiltshire lad you should bear in mind the Bristol Channel, that won't be too far from you
I shouldn't wonder.

Maybe we can link up in the winter for some Codding if any decent ones move up channel in and around the severn bridge.

If you consider any fishing on that area of the severn give Steve a ring in "Reelfun".......

http://www.reelfunfishing.co.uk/store/

He's in Portishead and is always in the know for whats going on in and around the middle to upper bits of the channel.

He does top bait and will always put it by from a phonecall.....just tell him Gazza(formally from Heathrow) put you onto him.....youll be guaranteed some abuse if nuffin else..!!! :fishing:
