Knott end - Looong day!!

Postby Paul » 28 Jun 2015, 11:50

So I've been off work for a grand total of 11 weeks with the arrival of my second son, during that time I've been out on the boat......errrrr.............NONE!

11 weeks off work and no trips out.... so with being back to work tomorrow, i managed to snatch a day yesterday from knott end, with TerryG (Padstas son for those who might not know)

The wind had been forecast to be a little snotty in the morning but easing off early afternoon.... Well it was certainly snotty!!!! Rough as a badgers backsides might be another way to put it   :hurt: :hurt:

Plans of hitting the tope looked off the cards and fishing in the lee of Kingscar seemed the best option to see if it eased off after a few hours. Fishing was dire, a few doggies, maybe a dozen mackeral, but one decent Raymond weighed in the net at 11lb so somewhere around 10lb

Mid afternoon and the wind did drop a little so we decided to have a run around to Shell wharf, a run of about 5 miles.... it was still fairly rough, but we got there....

The 3 tope baits out the back were just getting hammered by doggies, but we also carried on with the feathers, and had a manic half hour and ended up with about 100 mackerel between us for the freezer.

After a couple of hours the wind picked back up creating some "interesting" conditions!! TIme to head back.... the 5 mile run back to wyrelight seemed to take forever with a huge following sea - its never good surfing back in on a swell thats breaking under you :sos: :sos: :sos: :sos:

Aching a bit today and my face is like a lobster!! Spoke to Terry just before and i think he is broken too!

Despite the weather and poor fishing we had a good craic and still enjoyed ourselves, and plenty of Macks for the freezer.

A good bag of mackeral too, did you get them on the drift? What depth were they in?

Hi Graham

We had a try around fairway bouy drifting but only got a couple.... The mad half hour was sat at anchor a few hundred yards E-SE of Shell wharf bouy, depth was about about 35 ft an hour or two after low water, most caught midwater at around 15-20ft
