Its what I tend to use. Plenty of suction but needs lubing fairly regularly. I use an original washer and stainless washer either side to give it strength. People have said they squash down fairly quickly. I've never had that problem but mainly use my pump for skellies where the sand is usually a bit wetter and the suction doesn't have to be too good or you gut the worms. I would imagine if you are pumping black on a dry, firm beach and the wingnut has to be tightened a lot it would squash the foam. However, silicone has also got its problems with over tightening. It tends to split. I suppose if you have the time and inclination silicone is the way to go but for me I'm happy with the rig winder option, cheap and efficient.

Here's my ten penorth for what its worth.
Put a long potato between your feet & push your pump through twice, put masking tape over one side & fill both holes, as the silicon cures the spud dries & the finished washers just drop out. Easy peasy.
