Merseyside - Mariners Wharf Liverpool

Postby Rushy » 27 Nov 2012, 23:32

A popular and easy fishing venue on the Mersey, fishing is from a well lit promenade with railings and safe parking close by.
This venue offers excellent clean ground fishing in autumn/winter for good size cod generally in the 2-4lb bracket and plentiful whiting, with improving catches of Thornback ray from August onwards. You can also expect dabs, flounder and the occasional good size sole.

Tides
Don't fish tides over 8.2m or 28ft, even though it is possible to hold bottom on the flood, it will be full of debris and rubbish on your line

You can fish from the Bullnose but this is a popular spot and can get very crowded.....
Image

Be warned the bullnose is the entrance to the marina which is busy approaching high water with yachts and boats coming and going, often without warning. Quite a few anglers have lost rods over the side due to this.

If the bullnose is busy, there's plenty of room to fish further down behind the flats. In fact the better thornbacks come out down this stretch due to the large sandbank evident at low water

If behind the flats is busy, you can walk over the marina entrance gates and fish the promenade on the other side of the marina

Baits
Most baits will catch with the usual suspects of fresh/frozen black, lugworm, peeler crab, squid and mussel good options if targeting cod, or mackerel/worm for good size whiting. Squid and sandeel or a combination of both in a wrap will work well if targeting thornbacks in late summer/early autumn

Rigs
Most popular rigs will catch, with distance often not a priority as good fish can be caught close in. When the tide is running hard on the ebb, shorter casting can be a necessity

Another warning!

Picture of the snag at low water, one to be avoided!

Mariners Wharf quite often throws up a few big fish each year, with cod up to 15lb and thornback rays up to 8lb being landed in 2012 so far :thumb:

The first two minutes of this video show the flats side of Mariners, crossing the lock gates at 2.15 and where you can fish on the other side at 3.30 minutes

At either venue you can fish 3/4 hrs before its up to you how long after depending on the tidal pull.don't fish mariners above 8.5 but otters 8.8even 9 less pull.pulley pennel big bait squid and black long and 2 hook flappers closer in .but you'll catch fish close in too .its like a pier as opposed to trudging with your gear .id say otters best ist time there's a cafe with toilets at the adventure park.squid and black standard fresh prawns mussels razor clams usual stuff
