Morecambe kayak plaice fishing - the return 16/04/12
With another window in the weather, myself and Paul took the opportunity to get the kayaks out again (cheers Tez!) and have a see what was about. We had a quick stop at Gerrys for some fresh blow lug, and a bonus packet of ragworm for a tip that John Walker asked us to try
We launched at the jetty again, but this time decided to paddle round the other side and fish where the match was held.
Once again, glorious sunshine and light winds greeted us as we prepared to launch two hours into the ebb
Paul was first in the water and quick to paddle off in readiness to anchor up
The settled weather had improved the water clarity tremendously....
Once I got round the jetty, Paul had already anchored up and was waiting patiently for me as I'd got the bait!
Unfortunately, the wind was coming from a westerly direction which was pushing against the ebbing tide which created 'wind against tide' rollers which made fishing pretty uncomfortable
Paul pulled in the first decent fish of the day, a good size plaice which he returned
Double head of flounders for me
The fishing became increasingly uncomfortable with the rollers, so we made the decision to upp anchor and head off down the Broadway end of town where we'd successfully had a plaice bonanza the other day. This meant a bit of a slog against the tide but we both felt it would be worth the effort. Straight away we were both into good fish....
The tide had dropped considerably and the run was fairly weak, which meant the fishing dropped off as low tide approached. I left Paul at anchor, as I found that the wind was just strong enough to push my kayak against the tide on a very slow drift, this imparted enough movement into my baits which resulted in a few bonus fish when the fishing had slowed right down....
I also tried John Walkers trick of tipping off my lugworm baits with a piece of ragworm, with the head nipped off, which meant lots of wriggling, and thus more movement for the plaice to home in on
At dead low I decided to have a paddle over to a German U-boat which had surfaced slightly downtide of us!
Upon closer inspection it became apparent I wouldn't be fighting any Nazi's today, the dropping tide had revealed an old trailer that the mussellers had left behind. Ironically, it was covered in loads of good size mussels.....
I paddled over to the shore as I was now desperate to stretch my legs and have a pee, I'd got the colonel out and and was shaking him off, when I looked over my shoulder to see these three dodgy characters watching me! Brian, John and StevieT
Good to meet you boys and have a chat
At last the flood got into its stride, and no sooner had it happened than the fish went hard on the feed, like flicking a switch...
My best fish of 42cm
Paul trumped it with one at 44cm!
It was a fish a drop, with plenty of double headers coming out and some good size plaice
I lost count of the fish we caught, I took half a dozen or so of the better ones home, which were big enough to fillet down
The only down side of the day was the paddle home, it was against the middle of the flooding tide and into a stiff headwind to say we were knackered when we reached the jetty was an understatement, but we'd both guessed right earlier in the day, it was well worth the effort. Another excellent days fishing, I slept like a log that night!
