Ray Day 26/6/19
After a long overdue boat session with Padsta Tel we both found ourselves down at Green Street slipway at 6AM after conjuring up a plan together on Monday. After a few cock ups on my end which involved me backing out of Tuesdays session due to work and having to be back on shore for 3PM for work today meant we could not fish our chosen mark of Heysham and would have to settle a bit closer to the Stone Jetty. Quick natter with Terry and the boat was soon launched and moored ready for our departure quick check to see if we had all the gear and we were off. We began our session anchoring up about 600 yards off the jetty and it soon became aparant that the flow was horrendous and had us both pondering what the heck was going on. We were soon set up with two rods a peice one for the hounds/rays and one for the smaller stuff and me being the greedy angler I am took an extra spinning rod in case we ended up on one of Terrys secret bass marks Rigs wise could not be simpler running ledgers and spreader booms. First drop down resulted in a lovely plaice on the spinning rod and what a superb fight. No sooner was I scrapping with a Plaice all over Terrys deck I nearly lost his Ugly Stick when a smoothhound made a run for it. A quick photo and he was soon back but the plaice was coming with us. Terry switched on to crab hoping for a hound as usually when there is one others follow I stuck with squid.
2 Hours had passed and the tide was still racing through so Skipper Tel decides on a tactical movement to find some calmer water hoping the rays would be on the feed now the tide had begun to settle and boy was he right we steamed up the bay a few hundred yards and found what seemed to be calmer water and we were straight into the fish from the off. I kicked things of with a small schoolie followed by two rays. Terry not to be outdone by some young gun was soon into the rays. A few hours later and plenty of fish landed between us we decided to go for a bit of a reccy and try and find the second channel further out in the bay things were going well till we nearly ran a ground in 3FT water . Change of plan says Terry we will stick it out here that suits me just fine. After anchoring up again we were both again back into the fish and also a few suprises chucked in for good measure I managed my first ever sole and also hooked into a cracking thornie on the spinning gear but he straightned the hook. Terry dropped me off at 3 on the gravel road next to the jetty and he stuck it for a few more hours bagging himself some decent plaice and a few thornbacks for good measure. We managed over 20 Thornbacks 2 bass 2 sole a few plaice and a lonely hound. Absolute cracking day with top banter and great company as always with Terry but I'm a little bit sunburnt
