Taken from the wikipedia description

As a note Morecambe Bay has a tidal range in excess of 10m....

Bores occur in relatively few locations worldwide, usually in areas with a large tidal range (typically more than 6 metres (20 ft) between high and low water), and where incoming tides are funneled into a shallow, narrowing river or lake via a broad bay. The funnel-like shape not only increases the tidal range, but it can also decrease the duration of the flood tide, down to a point where the flood appears as a sudden increase in the water level. Note the tidal bore takes place during the flood tide and never during the ebb tide.

Imagine the whole tide of morecambe bay which in itself is pretty fast, funneling into a narrow river!!! It mainly happens on big tides... the bigger the tide, the bigger and faster the bore.

If you imagine a tap with a certain flow of water.... then put your thumb on the end to reduce the exit hole the pressure is much greater and the water flows a lot faster....

If you want to see an impressive tidal bore go to Arnside Cumbria ten mtrs or above the coastguard used to sound a warning siren to warn people walking on the sands to get to high ground asp it covers the sands in minutes had a couple of near does myself.
