Rossall 24th April
With the crabs starting their annual mass peel, thoughts turn to Smoothhound although it was a bit early in the year really, myself and Paul decided to have a bash for them off Rossall on the yaks. Unfortunately Terry was busy again but he kindly gave permission for me to loan his yak...again! and the super trooper that he is, he even gave us a bucket of crab that was going spare
He even got up early to make sure we got them
ain't he gorgeous!
It was a glorious morning....
We were soon in the water behind Rossall school and paddled about a mile or so out..
We'd got there just before low water, so the fishing was very slow to start with, with nothing at all for the first hour until the tide started getting up a head of steam, then small codlets began showing and the odd doggie and ever present dab
It was proving a slow day and we were considering a move when I got a small tap on one of my rods, thinking it was another codlet I struck into it, the way the line moved uptide gave away that this was no small codling.....the rod tip arched over and line began stripping from the reel......after a tremendous scrap, a hard fighting Starry smut of 8-10lb was safely aboard the yak
mission accomplished...
It even put up a great scrap in the yak!
About 45 mins later a similar bite with a similar result, this time a slightly smaller common.....
Soon after, Paul landed a Starry of his own....
It was still very slow, with fish few and far between, so when the wind got up and the swell became annoying we decided to up anchor and head for home..

Make a difference - take home one piece of someone's angling litter next time you are out fishing

Glad you managed to get out. I didn`t want to risk it with the wind forcast.
I had to settle for a 15 mile paddle on Windermere

Great report Dave
It was a little disappointing, but with a small tide and probably a few weeks early for the real sport it wasnt that surprising I suppose.
If only the wind had stayed as it was when we first got out... got pretty sloppy towards the end
Theres always next weekend.... another 4 days off

if you close your eyes it sounds like a dodgy home made porn flick "oooh oooh ...etc and 'it doesnt help when its side-on' is a proper double entendre
