Rossall Point/King Scar low water
I woke early doors in pain from the shoulder and couldn't get back to sleep, so I decided on a low water reconnaissance mission to the Fylde. I wasn't so much fishing as checking out likely looking spots I'd spied in the distance when I'd gone plugging with hughie the other day. What a SLOG! It was 3 mile out to the low water mark on King Scar itself, and then 3 mile back Once that tide turned it was squeaky bum time!
My route was the zig zag yellow line.....
Here's a few pics I took along the way....
The start of the long walk
A patch of rough ground appearing with the dropping tide, not quite halfway to King Scar
Looking back to the new coastguards tower.....
There were some good worm casts on the way out.....
Plenty of them too......
What looked like a person from a distance turned out to be part of a shipwreck.....
Looking out towards King Scar....
On the Scar itself looking towards Wyre light in the distance
Looking out to sea down the spit of land that appears on big tides, King Scar buoy to the right in the distance
On the spit of land looking back to shore, Wyre light in the far distance on the left...
Some of the locals call the spit 'the Roman road' as rumour has it that it used to lead to an ancient Roman port, now long under water...I can see where the idea came from as it almost looked man made
The top of another wreck just showing as the tide dropped......
King Scar buoy, almost within touching distance it seemed!
The only fish I saw, a dead doggie.........
Looking back towards the highest point of the scar, the huge pile of rocks/boulders.....
The tide soon turned and as I wasn't sure how it would flood or how quickly, I thought discretion was the better part of valour and took a slow walk back without fishing! but not without checking the huge pile of boulders which hardly ever seem to get covered by the tides. I've steamed past on my boat at high water and the top is still showing !
Once I got there, evidence of yet another wreck....
On top of the boulder pile, looking back to sea and the now fast covering King Scar spit....
On top of the boulders look back towards Fleetwood.....
And over to Wyre light again......
Setting off back to Rossall, with the new coastguard tower in the distance on the right.....
As I got closer to shore, I checked out a mussel bed and had a few casts of the lure. I nearly s**t meself when juvenile seal popped up to investigate my lure! I don't know who was more surprised him or me!
I also found an abandoned or lost gill-net, full of dead dogfish which meant it was also full of hungry crabs....including a couple of small edibles which I cut free...

Once back on the shore proper, not one but two abandoned setlines/nightlines, hooks still in evidence
Some nobheads about, leaving s**t like that lying around.....
So that was that....something I've always wanted to do, and I might do again. It seemed pretty safe with no major gulleys to cross, just a few fast flowing runoffs and the sand was pretty hard all the way. I'm pretty certain if I'd took the time for a more concerted effort I could have had a hook up. That's the next stage.

Make a difference - take home one piece of someone's angling litter next time you are out fishing

That brings back a few memories, I have fished it many times in the past, I had an old motor bike I travelled out on it made the trip a bit easier, you need to be out there as soon after high water as you can , but its a long walk around all the gullies because some of them are to deep to cross, that where the bike came in handy, you could zig-zag out and not have to cross them.
A safe time to leave when the tide was flooding was one and a half hours after the low water time in the tide book you could push it a bit but only by 10 mins, it all depends on the wind direction, you have to remember you have to cross the neckings, that is the channel you fish at the back of the coast guard station. hope this helps, but remember don't leave it too late even if the fish are about.

Thats a serious stroll over some flat terrain, must have been interesting to plan future boat trips over gulleys and mussle beds.
Larfed at your seal encounter, hardly a fair encounter if that bugga would have grabbed you lure.
Is that Nr ......Walney Island ..? as some friends that put us up in Barrow took us there and we too walked for what seemed hours our over sand flats.....sorry Rushy my local knowledge of your back yard is limited.
My only memory of Fleetwood was the ferry that took us over to the Isle of Man,and standing in the Q the purser calls you name out "I shiiiite meself"" and turns out the girfriends unc is a Manx Herring fisherman and has paid for a private berth for his niece and I ....now thats proper family.
thanks for the post fella, brought back some 30 year memories.....
