Adventure Fishing Magazine
Well, this review has been in the back of my mind for quite some time, ever since i saw an announcement on Facebook about its release date. I did consider jumping on the bandwagon and commenting there and then but i resisted.
I even considered doing a review after flicking through quickly, but again I resisted.
Only now several weeks later do i feel i have read the magazine sufficiently to comment.
So what is Adventure fishing?? Its a brand new Magazine whose tagline is "Your Ultimate Trip starts here" That is a pretty good explanation of the content.
With a big name that most of us will have heard of, Henry Gilbey!
The Adventure fishing website says:
My First impressions
My very first thoughts were nice cover, huge fish, but at nearly £5 perhaps a bit pricey compared to other fishing magazines on the shelf
I soon flicked through the glossy pages and, WOW!!!! If you have ever viewed Henry Gilbeys website you will know of his exceptional photography skills. Pair this passion with the fact he is an angling junkie (his words) and you have a recipe for Sea Fishing Porn!! In my opinion the ideal choice for his post of contributing editor.
Virtually every page contains a stunning, high resolution photo of either seascape, river bed, or Angling trophy, with several double page spreads of a fishy scene to start off an "Adventure"
Another observation was that there seemed to be a distinct lack of adverts. Something which appears to have taken over some of the monthlies. The few adverts there are follow the same glossy hi-res theme.
After only a few minutes you really start to appreciate where your fiver has gone.

Getting past the photos and down to business. The magazine is a real mix. With articles, from jet-set angling expeditions targeting Giant trevally in the Seychelles, Barbel in Spain, and Marlin at Cape Verde, to, Bassing in Ireland and fishing a dry fly on your local river. There is pretty much something for everyone.
There is also quite a few tackle reviews for the latest gear. One observation, not necessarily a criticism, is that the reviews seem to be top end gear.
The articles are well written, complimented by the aforementioned images and include all the information you would need to start planning an angling trip. In many ways, and i mean this as a positive, some of the featured stories are closer to a holiday brochure than an angling magazine. Each Adventure contains a factfile at the end, this is different for each article, but usually contains specific information that the traveling angler would need to know, from Visa information and estimated costs of a trip, to cultural tips and suggested websites to check out. On every feature there is also a Tackle Box section to tell you what gear you need to take.
You really get a comprehensive guide for your next trip.
In Summary
This really is a beautifully put together Angling "Brochure". With superb pictures and well written, thorough articles to inspire even the laziest Anglers amongst us.
Some of the trips are once in a lifetime holidays that most of us can only dream of, but, there is something for every pocket.
Imagine if Robson Greens Extreme fishing had been done by Henry Gilbey, and you won't be a million miles away!!
If you are looking for something different to the same old fishing mags, buy this!!

Re: Adventure Fishing Magazine
Great review, I must admit I flicked through the magazine in WH Smiths and the photography was stunning unfortunately, the missus found me and dragged me away before I got chance for a closer perusal....after reading this I think I'll have another gander and might even part with a fiver
I know what you're saying about other fishing mags, they seem to be all adverts and recycled articles......I mean, how many times can we be taught to use peeler crab

Make a difference - take home one piece of someone's angling litter next time you are out fishing

don't think i can add any more to that - my situation was almost identical - i'd heard about the mag on Gilbey's blog and was looking forward to a nosey at it in whs' - I think there is a market for it to be honest - Granted the usual uk sea comics do what they do - (and you have to consider that a lot of peoples first contact with angling is with the mags so the re-run advice will always be there - striking the balance to keep the regular purchaser is the key though)
It must be hard with the access to allsorts of info on the net these days to make a magazine that can earn a bob for its publishers(look what happened to porn lol ). That said and done you can't beat a good mag / book = the half hour read at dinner, on the crapper (although 3g phone has shifted this a little lol), or even in bed with a cuppa - plus the contents are thought out for you, on the net you have to find the stuff, let face it id probably not be looking at GT fishing without someone putting a link up so maybe you get a little tied up in a particular style of fishing for example.
Just like i used to buy the american motocross mags in the 80's for my extra fix of 2 wheeled fun after t+mx and DBR was read, i think ill stick a fiver the way of whs' for this too.
thanks for the review Paul - see , told you at the beginning i have nothing more to add lol

Re: Adventure Fishing Magazine
Cheers for the feedback Chris Some excellent points
Totally agree, there is something about sitting and reading a magazine that you don't quite get on the internet, yet all the info is probably there....
Its a great read, i would certainly recommend it.....
